Dear Students And Parents

(--Paper Bridge--)
Our Technology Education has started with the grade 5 students last week and we kicked off with a basic introduction about structures. We learned that there are natural structures and man-made structures around us. We will follow this course for two weeks now and end it at the end of November. It is to teach students about structures and why we need them. This week the students will make a model. The students will get straws and glue to build a bridge or a tower. We will end the lessons with a documentary about how the Taipei 101 was build and just bring Taiwan’s pride under the student’s attention again.

Ghost Show!

On October 27 Dung Xin Elementary School hosts its annual Halloween event!  Our students eagerly look forward to the traditions and customs of this popular day.  Halloween is the 2nd most celebrated cultural activity in many countries around the world (after Christmas) and our English teachers have planned very special (and scary) surprises!

Students are invited to join a ghost party. All the teachers, kids, and volunteer parents are all asked to dress up in costumes. The ghost show will be a spooky and frightening place filled with terrifying sights and sounds that will take you to an unexpected world. Saving the best for last, there will also be“Apple Bobbing” and “Candy Snap” games that will definitly  bring the ghost show to its climax.

Dear students and parents.

My name is Corne and I am the new English Teacher at Dung Xin Elementary school. I am from Johannesburg, South Africa and I am twenty six years old. I have been in Taiwan for two and a half years now, and I really like the country and its friendly people. I am a certified teacher and I hold a Bachelors Degree in Technology Education, with Business Management and Psychology as main Subjects. I taught for a year in South Africa before I came to Taiwan where I worked at Sacred Heart Elementary school until recently. I enjoy teaching a lot and it feels so good to make a positive contribute in children’s lives through teaching. I am exited to be here and hope to meet all of my students soon. We are going to have so much fun learning English.

2010 Summer Camp

Thanks to our friends from Chung Yu Institute of Technology for joining us for our 1-week summer camp during these very hot days in July.  Our students, from grades 2 through 5, from elementary schools across Keelung, discovered the excitement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, enjoyed circle time activities, learned some soccer skills and drills and competed in an intramural tournament with students from Hsin Yi Elementary School. On the last day, Alex organized fun sports and water relay races -- the top 3 teams won ice cream treats!

Though temperatures reached highs of 38 degrees Celsius, our students remembered to drink plenty of water and move into the shade to take frequent rest breaks.

Acceptance of students into this free summer camp program was NOT based on English ability but on the basis of:   disadvantaged economic circumstances, single-parent homes, aboriginal families, children from families where one parent is non-native Taiwanese, and children of school teachers and staff.

Fun at Chung Li English Village

On Tuesday, June 29th, a group of grade 4 and grade 5 students visited the Taoyuan International English Village at Chung Li Elementary School.  Our students enjoyed hands-on actvities in a variety of scenarios including:  cooking in a kitchen, riding an airplane, duty free shopping, shopping in a supermarket, checking in to a hotel and recording a TV news program.

Thanks to Claire Fuh and the American, Canadian and New Zealand teachers for providing enriching, experiential learning opportunities that our students will
remember.

Getting Ready for Chung Li English Village

Grade 4 and 5 students were asked to write why they want to participate in our school field trip to Chung Li English Village later this month (Tuesday, June 29, 2010).

Here are some of their written responses:

English is my favorite subject. I hope I can speak to foreign people smoothly and read English books easily. I don’t want to miss any chance of learning English because I think my English will show improvement with practice. So I really want to be chosen for this field trip to Chung Li English Village. The opportunity is too good and I don’t want to miss it. Wish me luck!

~ Joyce Wang 王敏容 (Class 405)

(Class 501)

English is my favorite subject. I feel very happy when I study English. One of my dreams is to be an English teacher. Therefore, I want to learn more English. I hope I can speak English fluently. I want to have a chance to meet teachers from all over the world. I’ve heared that Chung Li English Village has provided a great opportunity for students to learn English. So I sincerely hope you can choose me to go there to make my dream come true.
~ Angela Lan 藍彗瑜 (Class 406)

我想去英語村的原因是想體驗學習英文的樂趣,以及其他的精采活動,因為我相信:只要與老師和同學樂在其中,「快樂」學習英文並不是很難的。
