English at Dung Xin

OUR English program at Dung Xin Elementary School is focused on giving children a positive start to the study of a difficult and challenging language. Because much of the English that your child will study (especially in their later years, in junior and senior high school) is focused on grammar and translation, many students have poor listening abilities and are often very shy to speak in an unfamiliar language. Our challenge is to instill in young learners the interest, enthusiasm and ultimately, the confidence to learn and succeed in English.

In addition to our set curriculum of basic conversation skills, introductory phonics and beginning vocabulary, our students will be exposed to language as spoken by native English speakers, participate in hands-on activities and take an active approach to their learning that gives purpose and meaning to their English learning.

With your help and support, your child can be better prepared to meet this challenge. You can encourage your child to regularly review their materials, both text and CD. Reading aloud (at least 2 times each week) will help build speaking confidence. Ask to see your child's textbook. Near the end of each semester we will send home your child's writing notebook and English Passport (of dialogs and phrases) for you to review with your child.

Most importantly, listen to your child. Have meaningful conversations with your child and be patient and positive. Know that learning a new language is a lifelong endeavor.

New Chess Club at Dung Xin

Chess is a game of strategy that can help a child learn deep thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills – skills that are closely linked to success in school, especially in mathematics. It is a fun, challenging and endlessly creative game.

Children who learn and enjoy the game of chess also develop a greater respect for the importance of planning and organization. It is game that is not dependent on luck. The better one plays, the more rewarding the game becomes. The game of chess is also an internationally understood language that can provide long-term academic and cognitive benefits.

How can I join?
Interested students must meet the following conditions to be accepted into this activity:

1. Because ALL instruction will be in English, students must have sufficient proficiency in listening comprehension and speaking ability. Recommendations will be considered from your child's English teacher and homeroom teacher.

2. Students must be prepared to study, practice and review lesson materials before each club meeting.

3. Students are required to supply or purchase a tournament standard chess set (cheap paper sets from local $10 stores are poor quality and not good for learning purposes). The minimum requirement for this club to open is 1 chess set for every 2 students.

Note: It is recommended that each participating student have their own chess set so that they may continue to play at home and after this club activity is finished for the school year. A good quality chess set can last a lifetime.

For families that are interested, Dung Xin Elementary School will help order chess sets (tournament standard, made in Canada) from the Canadian Chess and Math Association. A sample set (Teacher Alex's) is available at the school for you to see.

4. Students must be able to work cooperatively. Although chess is a competitive game between 2 minds, a cooperative learning environment will help all students improve their chess tactics (abilities).

5. Students who misbehave or interfere with the learning of others will be asked to leave the club.

6. Because space is limited, interested students must write and explain why they are interested in joining this activity. This will help identify the students who are willing to learn and succeed. The written article may be in Chinese or English.

The Chess Club begins October 2009

The new chess club will meet once every two weeks on Tuesday afternoons, in accordance with the extracurricular activity schedule (as set by the Office of Student Affairs). If you have any questions, you may contact Alex at school or speak with Director Chen, Office of Student Affairs.

Enrollment deadline is Wednesday, September 16, 2009. Space is limited.
