Introduction of our new English Teacher: Corne

Dear students and parents.

My name is Corne and I am the new English Teacher at Dung Xin Elementary school. I am from Johannesburg, South Africa and I am twenty six years old. I have been in Taiwan for two and a half years now, and I really like the country and its friendly people. I am a certified teacher and I hold a Bachelors Degree in Technology Education, with Business Management and Psychology as main Subjects. I taught for a year in South Africa before I came to Taiwan where I worked at Sacred Heart Elementary school until recently. I enjoy teaching a lot and it feels so good to make a positive contribute in children’s lives through teaching. I am exited to be here and hope to meet all of my students soon. We are going to have so much fun learning English.

2010 Summer Camp

Thanks to our friends from Chung Yu Institute of Technology for joining us for our 1-week summer camp during these very hot days in July.  Our students, from grades 2 through 5, from elementary schools across Keelung, discovered the excitement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, enjoyed circle time activities, learned some soccer skills and drills and competed in an intramural tournament with students from Hsin Yi Elementary School. On the last day, Alex organized fun sports and water relay races -- the top 3 teams won ice cream treats!

Though temperatures reached highs of 38 degrees Celsius, our students remembered to drink plenty of water and move into the shade to take frequent rest breaks.

Acceptance of students into this free summer camp program was NOT based on English ability but on the basis of:   disadvantaged economic circumstances, single-parent homes, aboriginal families, children from families where one parent is non-native Taiwanese, and children of school teachers and staff.

Getting Ready for Chung Li English Village

Grade 4 and 5 students were asked to write why they want to participate in our school field trip to Chung Li English Village later this month (Tuesday, June 29, 2010).

Here are some of their written responses:

English is my favorite subject. I hope I can speak to foreign people smoothly and read English books easily. I don’t want to miss any chance of learning English because I think my English will show improvement with practice. So I really want to be chosen for this field trip to Chung Li English Village. The opportunity is too good and I don’t want to miss it. Wish me luck!

~ Joyce Wang 王敏容 (Class 405)

(Class 501)

English is my favorite subject. I feel very happy when I study English. One of my dreams is to be an English teacher. Therefore, I want to learn more English. I hope I can speak English fluently. I want to have a chance to meet teachers from all over the world. I’ve heared that Chung Li English Village has provided a great opportunity for students to learn English. So I sincerely hope you can choose me to go there to make my dream come true.
~ Angela Lan 藍彗瑜 (Class 406)

我想去英語村的原因是想體驗學習英文的樂趣,以及其他的精采活動,因為我相信:只要與老師和同學樂在其中,「快樂」學習英文並不是很難的。

Grade 6 Scavenger Hunt Winners!

Last month all grade 6 classes participated in a Spring Scavenger Hunt in and around our school campus.  Students worked together in teams to find listed objects and answers to English questions in a limited time.   Students were instructed to use good manners and to ask for permission before borrowing anything.

The scavenger hunt was a great opportunity for students to use their skills in cooperative learning, communication, and especially, resourcefulness.

The most successful teams and the hardest working students planned, collaborated and moved quickly to earn as many points as possible in this activity.  Everyone agreed it was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to learn more about our school environment.  Thanks go to our office staff and our Directors for answering the students' many requests and questions that week.

Here are the winning teams from each class:

Class 601 - Jessie, Apple, Janice, Gary and William

Class 603 -  York, Bruce, Ben, Candy and Cindy

Class 605 -  Alan, Ivy, Dino, Howard and Sean

Class 606 - Jenny, Apple, Fanny, Ben and Peter.

Class 607 - Phoebe, Small, Jordan, Bella and Rita.

Also:  Class 604 - Neil, Robert, Jerry and Nana

Class 601 student, Bobo, shows off the Mercedes Benz car keys that earned his team 25 points!

Congratulations to our winning Spring Scavenger Hunt teams!
