Earth Day Art - Grade 5

This month all grade 5 students reflected on the problems, causes and possible solutions to the serious environmental issues confronting our world. On Earth Day, we discussed how electronic waste impacts our environment and our health. We also discussed ways we could save energy and its effects on global warming. Students then created wonderful posters to illustrate their concerns and ideas.

Earth Day - April 22, 2009

In recognition of Earth Day, Dung Xin's grade 5 and 6 students will focus their thoughts and ideas on how we contribute to Earth's environmental problems -- and to their possible solutions. Here are links to 2 videos we will discuss in English class this week:

2009 Easter Egg Hunt

On Wednesday, April 8, Dung Xin hosted its annual Easter Egg Hunt. Students (grades 1 through 6) searched the school campus for winning tickets hidden by the Easter bunny. Each winning ticket could then be redeemed for a Kinder chocolate egg. Thanks to the Easter bunny's special helpers for making the day a big success!

Grade 5 English Singing Contest

I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
and snow-white turtle doves

I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms
and keep it company

I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land

That's the song I hear
That the world sings today

A song of peace that echoes on
And never goes away

Put your hand in my hand
Let's begin today
Put your hand in my hand
Help me find a way

From the 1971 Billy Davis/Coca Cola hit "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing".

Alex Returns to Dung Xin

It is great to be back at Dung Xin.

As many of you already know, I was teaching at ShiDing Elementary School for the past 3 and a half months. The students, teachers and staff at ShiDing did everything to make me feel welcome and I truly enjoyed my time at their school. I also had the opportunity to give a professional development seminar on the art of storytelling. This was warmly received by the teaching and administrative staff.

Now that I am back at Dung Xin, my English teaching topics will focus on getting students to THINK. As the Grade 5 and 6 students learned last week, we want to use the WHOLE brain (identify, analyze, remember), then we can be more effective learners and be better prepared for class.

This week's lesson will ask students to think about the meaning of ETHNICITY and to think before we rush to judge others (by their appearances). For a fun visual test to identify the ethnicity of Asian-Americans, go to All Look Same. You will need to register (remember, you need not use your real name) to access the free quiz.
